With the latest Covid-19 rules in place, it is not TOO different for us at Bar 1620, as we continue to offer only table service for our guests. However we do now close by 10pm, with last orders at 9.30pm so that we can close the doors on time. Please ensure that you download the NHS app for track and trace and use the QR code on entry. When you enter Bar 1620, you need to be wearing a mask please, and please don your mask any time you get up from the table, including going to our posh loos! You can take your mask off whenever you are sat down. Remember it is table service only at all times. Please do not stand at the bar at any time. Our staff will be wearing masks behind the bar and when serving your drinks too. We highly recommend that you book in advance, and groups of up to 6 people only please. This includes children and we kindly ask that you stay within the government guidelines and do not switch between tables. Please also observe social distancing rules throughout your time at Bar 1620. And FINALLY, please be thoughtful and kind while we again re-adjust to the new norm once again, we want to offer a safe and happy place for you all to enjoy your time with us. Meet Kate Baker, owner of Bar 1620 - the "grand fromage" so to speak! Kate started her "life in Dartmouth" creating Bakers Bar, & bringing lots of champagne and great cocktails to Dartmouth in this teeny tiny bar back in the day! She spent the next few years cultivating 2 mini Bakers into bigger grown ups (Billy & Frankie), with the help of the amazing Dartmouth fresh air and salty water, and then last year she suddenly found herself buying another bar! The beginning of 2020 saw Kate passionately renovating Bellini's Bar (with a fabulous team) and loved every minute of bringing her and Richard's vision to life (with a couple of extra Covid months to titivate!). Favourite cocktail: A great cold salty rimmed Margarita, especially when made using premium tequila for ultimate smoothness try Patron or Casamigo. Yum! Favourite cocktail to make: The Pear Drop - from the delicate vintage glass to the delicious frothy top and pretty finishing touches this to me says heaven in a glass. Best thing about living and owning a bar in Dartmouth: Being able to get out on the paddleboard early in the morning when the sea or the river is flat and clear. also Kate enjoys sea swimming all year round the buzz of a cold day in January to the balmy September evenings and gossiping with Tom Shanley, her right hand man (the bar maestro!) The support and comments have been amazing since Bar 1620 opened its doors on the 4th July 2020, and Kate is loving seeing you all again in the newly renovated Bar 1620. Watching everyone enjoy their time in this new venture has been the best achievement she could have asked for in a tough year. Everyone has been so kind, courteous and caring, and long may that continue. Cheers 🥂 Meet 1620’s bar Manager Tom Shanley, Tom is 6”4’ (in flats!) and has been developing his skills in the hospitality trade for over 10 years, before joining the team at Bar 1620 this summer. Tom’s favourite cocktail to drink is the iconic Moscow Mule, consisting of vodka, lime juice and ginger beer served in a hammered metal mug and is believed to have originated in the USA during 1940s. (Vodka wasn't a popular alcohol in America and was generally joked about being a Russian drink. John G. Martin, an alcohol seller, took a leap of faith and bought a vodka brand in the States but no-one would drink it. One day, while Martin was loitering around upset about his inability to sell the drink, he went up to a bartender at the L.A. bar Cock 'n' Bull and talked to the owner Jack Morgan who faced a similar problem of not being able to sell even a single ginger beer. They decided to come together and mix the two drinks. They then decided on the name Moscow Mule, Moscow because of Americans tendency to associate vodka with Russia, and Mule was added to the name because the ginger beer gave it a real “kick”! They marketed the drink, sales soared, and from then onwards, vodka was accepted as a drink in America.) Tom’s favourite drink to mix up at Bar 1620 is one of their signature cocktails ‘Creature from the Black Lagoon’ - Jamesons Whiskey, Absolute Vodka, Triple Sec, Lamb’s Navy Rum, Plymouth Gin, Olmecca Tequila, Martini Extra Dry, Orange Juice, Lime Juice, topped with Coke and served in a teapot for 1...or tea for 2 if you like to share! Just delicious! Tom loves being part of Dartmouth’s volunteer crew for the RNLI Lifeboat, (he’s been seen running from Bar 1620 to a shout along the river embankment, suited & booted, on more than one occasion & fined by his crew accordingly ;-) His favourite thing about living in Dartmouth is being by the water and of course the stunning Dartmouth scenery. He never tires of it... why would he, it’s one of the most beautiful towns in the world (not that we are biased!) Tom’s favourite creature in the bar is Sid the green parrot 🦜 We are excited to announce that we are opening for business on Saturday 4th July from midday. We are putting a number of measures in place to keep you, and our team, safe so you can enjoy yourselves and still feel relaxed. We firmly believe this needs to be a joint effort between our team and our guests, so we urge you to please use maximum common sense to play your part in keeping everyone safe. In return we will be doing the same for you. Importantly, we will not be allowing any of our team members displaying symptoms inside our bar and we would ask you to exercise the same cautionary approach. We will continually be reviewing our systems to ensure you have a safe experience at Bar 1620. This is way is new to us all so please be understanding if things aren’t as simple as they used to be. On arrival we will greet you at the door, where there will be a hand sanitiser station. We will then ask for you to write down a contact number which will then be placed into an envelope, which will have a date and time stamp on it and we will retain this for 21 days. You will be directed to a table, and our menus will be either wipeable (cleaned after each guest has left the table) or single use (please excuse these are not our usual quality menus!)
